Depending on which side of the restaurant you’re placed, you could have the good fortune of walking by the massive showcase filled with freshly made cakes, pies, cupcakes, bread and more. It’s pretty overwhelming, but seeing this can help you make a mental note to definitely save some room for dessert....

Aline 20 deep snaked through the well-lit Old Winston Social Club, wrapping around the bar as people waited to sample over a dozen homemade macaroni and cheese dishes. Not everyone packed into the bar came for the food, but considering the quality of the cuisine and the fact that it was free, it’s a wonder there were even a few stray open seats....

The menu changes daily, including fried chicken each Wednesday and flounder — “The best fish in town,” my server said — on Fridays. The fall special: grilled pimento cheese. There’s also a threevegetable plate for $6 that a regular came in and ordered, but I don’t think I could’ve forced myself to order anything else once I saw the turkey pot pie....

Sometimes I know exactly where I want to eat for the week’s Chow story. Other times I play it by ear. This was one of those times: A little internet research led me to a Winston-Salem joint called Rose’s Deli right around the time we celebrate the birthday of our own little Rose....

We know we’re in the right place when Jonathan Vilma and a few other New Orleans Saints brush past us at the bar to a private dining room in the back. They’ve got a home game on Sunday after a long stretch on the road, and these guys have their pick of any restaurant in the city....
