It’s about 1 a.m. when my roommate and I show up at Foothills, and the line is already to the parking lot. As we take our place in the back, it’s clear we are woefully underprepared. The two guys in front of us have set up chairs and a large cooler, and the group that steps in behind us brings mattresses and blankets....

I’ve been driving around the Triad for the last week with a weed whacker in my car. There’s also a rake, a poker set, a drill with a case of bits, a rain jacket with granola bars stuffed in the pockets, most of a carton of cigarettes, a tangle of car......

Your House is nothing fancy — it’s the opposite of fancy, actually: a genuine diner with rows of tables and booths, a counter lined with stools, a short-order cook running the griddle. There’s the clatter of plates being washed, stacked, slid in front of no-nonsense patrons who come for the coffee, the company, the promise of an honest meal....

Those duties fell to me and my fellow judges — Cecilia Thompson, director of projects at Action Greensboro, food writer and proprietor of the Mod Meals on Mendenhall food blog; and Chef Michael Harkenreader of Undercurrent restaurant....

I’m sitting on the back covered porch of the Sherrod House in the neighborhood known as Uptown High Point, fork in hand, ready to destroy my sensible lunch plans with a warm slice of cherry pie a la mode, the scoop of vanilla ice cream already settling into the plate....

location, which looked like the cluttered apartment of an eccentric aunt — are the most functional, too: A split-level dining room lined with booths and tables under high ceilings, with an open kitchen that looks big enough to prepare a Viking wedding banquet....

Way too much time had passed since my last culinary revelation. As a Michigan native, barbecue is not a natural staple for me. An aptitude for recognizing great barbecue is not one of my birthrights, and it wasn’t until I moved here in 1999 that I learned of such a skill existed....
