Goodwill places clients in jobs with Grasshoppers

A recent community job fair hosted by Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina drew almost 175 people, the agency says in a press release. One employer represented at the job fair, the Greensboro Grasshoppers, snapped up 42 Goodwill clients for temporary positions during this year’s season as ticket takers, gift-shop workers, parking-lot attendants, suite greeters and custodians. Some of the new hires, according to the press release, include people who have taken advantage of Goodwill’s job-readiness programs, computer lab and career-counseling services, and a dozen were Work First participants.

“We are confident that because of the training provided by Goodwill,” Grasshoppers President and General Manager Donald Moore said in a prepared statement, “all employees will be excellent workers.”

The Guilford County Prison Farm plant sale, which got underway on April 1, continues until the plants are sold out or the farm closes. Guilford County leaders are considering closing the farm, which prompted Sheriff BJ Barnes to make a combined sales and advocacy pitch in a press release. “What makes this year different is the budget constraints and the uncertainty of whether the farm and its farming operation will continue after this year,” Barnes said. “It kind of reminds me of the Rolling Stones song ‘The Last Time,’ which goes, ‘This could be the last time, may be the last time, I don’t know.’” The farm sells flowers, herbs, vegetables, Adirondack furniture and concrete garden items, all produced by prison labor with revenues going back into the county general fund.
