PEDESTRIANS AND MOTORISTS

There were three incidents in the Triad last week in which pedestrians were struck by motorists, two of which resulted in fatalities.

The first occurred at about 3 p.m. on June 10 near the 3700 block of Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem and resulted in the death of a 3-year-old girl. Corniella Rochelle Wright was struck by a 2003 Nissan Sentra driven by 21-year-old Inez Celastin Roberson. Roberson lost control of the vehicle and veered to the left and then back to the right across Peters Creek Parkway traveling north. The vehicle then struck a ditch and turned over. Wright, the victim, received serious injuries that later, after she was transported to Baptist Hospital, claimed her life. Roberson and her three passengers received minor injuries. No charges have been filed, though an investigation is underway.

June 11 at about 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Fairview and 12 th streets in Greensboro a 12-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle. The girl was crossing 12 th Street when she was hit by a 2005 Ford Ranger driven by 43-year-old Harry William Mack. The victim was taken to Moses Cone Hospital where she remains in critical condition. Mack was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Later Friday, at about 11 p.m., a man in a wheelchair was struck and killed in what police described as a hit-and-run. Police responded to the 1200 block of North Liberty Street at the US Highway 52 on-ramp and found Ronald Lee Watson lying in the roadway. It appeared that Watson was crossing Liberty Street headed north in a motorized wheelchair when he was hit by a silver Chevrolet SUV. According to witnesses, the driver initially stopped but then fled the scene traveling south on 52. Watson was taken to Baptist Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.
