Ethel and Norman have been coming to their summer home on Golden Pond for 48 years. This summer is different … the aging couple come face to face with the reality of Norman’s declining physical health and failing memory, a source of great frustration for the soon to be 80-year old man. Ethel, ten years younger, still delights in those things that have enriched their long life together, offering up encouragement and dealing with the man’s gloomy demeanor and insufferable personality. In the throes of despair, the couple receives an unexpected visit from their divorced, and estranged, daughter Chelsea who brings along the 13-year old son of her new fiancé and announces plans to spend several weeks in Europe, entrusting the boy’s care with her parents. The family drama turns to light-hearted fun as a bond is forged between the young boy and elderly man through fishing, books and lessons in teen awareness.
On Golden Pond originally opened on Broadway in 1979, earning a Tony and Drama Desk Award for actress Frances Sternhagen (Ethel), plus four additional Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Play, Outstanding Actor for Tom Aldredge (Norman), Outstanding Set Design and Outstanding Costume Design. The film adaptation starred Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, Dabney Coleman, Doug McKeon and William Lanteau, earning an Academy Award for Best Actor for Henry Fonda, a fourth Academy Award for Best Actress for Hepburn, and an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Ernest Thompson. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and was the second highest grossing movie of its year with over $119M.
