extended play

by Ryan Snyder

There’s no shortage of places to celebrate the New Year in the Triad this year, so this week’s Extended Play will focus mainly on the happenings of Thursday night. There will be a New Year’s Eve Eve show at the Blind Tiger with the Mantras and Hot Politics, however, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Mercy Mercedes, Jonas Sees In Color, Yearling, Nugget and the Fear of Falling will play Greene Street Club.

Me? I’m celebrating the end of the decade proper in Asheville with a cozy cabin and Toubab Krewe at the Orange Peel. Back at the Blind Tiger, the Mantras toast to 2010, while the Breakfast Club parties like it’s 1989 at Greene Street. Thirteen20 plays Moxies in Mocksville, while 90 Proof gets bent at Cooper’s Ale House. Over at the SoundVent in Thomasville, you have Feral Souls, 7 Day Sorrow, the Social Network and Grown Up Avenger Stuff, while they keep it rocking on New Year’s Day with a Light Divided, Seventh Epic, Dreamkiller, Beards And Bats, 7 Day Sorrow and Slaves To Addiction. Too hard and loud for your refined senses? Take your candy ass to see the Greensboro Symphony Pops concert at War Memorial Auditorium.

Moving on to Friday night, check out rappers Ignite and Imagery along with Seven and Doco at the Garage as one of the only other New Year’s Day shows.

Empty Pocket plays for a little change at the Blind Tiger on Saturday, while the Country Dan Collins Band, Box Wine and Minimal Side Effects hit the Garage. Things get a little weirder with Onward To Olympas (sic), Dependency, Missions and From Strength Within at Krankies Coffee. To wrap the week up in a tidy little bow, you pretty much need to see the Pacifico and House of Fools show at the Millennium Center. Happy new year, loyal readers.
