extended play

by Ryan Snyder

This week’s music lineup starts with an exclusive performance by country star Gretchen Wilson as she takes the stage at Johnny & June’s Ultra Saloon tonight, but only if you won tickets through a WTQR promotion.

The Dirk Quinn Band plays the Blind Tiger on a sparse Thursday night, while Mother’s Finest at the N Club leads a choosy Friday night. Most nobly, the Eastern Guilford’s Global Awareness Club is hosting a Benefit Concert for Charitywater, a third-world water purification nonprofit, at St. Marks Church, while Urban Sophisticate Aaron James brings his own band to Greene Street Club this Friday night. There’s Led Zep covers with Kashmir over at the Blind Tiger, while Tim Lee 3, Pacifico and Bellman Barker play the Garage. Blair Crimmins & the Hookers, Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands are the bands to see at Green Bean, while Dreamkiller plays the SoundVent. The Michael Stacey Band play your two-night segue on Friday and Saturday at Arizona Pete’s.

There’s actually a rather tasteful and talented country band playing Johnny & June’s this Saturday night by the name of Her & Kings County, but you clearly don’t want to miss headliner and unintended comic relief Colt Ford. Anything billed as “Country Meets Rap” brings some serious promise. Ryat and Tim Conley play the Hideout Bar, while Simplified plays the Blind Tiger on the other side of the highway. The Green Bean offers the most promising show of the weekend as the Tremors perform with Dr. Eugene Chadbourne.

For the indie and post-punk crowd, Low Sky, Rosetta, City of Ships and Battlefields play Legitimate Business on Sunday night, as the Mix Master Arts DJ Battle at Greene Street Club Tuesday night wraps up this week of shows.
