extended play

by Ryan Snyder

By the time this week’s Extended Play goes to print, you may have already missed the boat on a couple of prime live music opportunities. The first of those is close to selling out and for those with tickets, it will surely be an unforgettable Hump Day as Akron/Family (see last week’s lead Tunes story) and Bonnaroo-bound Warpaint perform tonight at Club Artistika.

The Thursday night jam-case at the Blind Tiger includes the not-a-jam-band Doc Aquatic with the Mumbles, or help benefit Wake Radio with Terrance & the Tall Boys, Sugar High Gang, Distrails, and Bolmangani at the Wherehouse.

Who are Chris Stanfield and the Naturals? Find out Friday at the Blind Tiger. Phive Mics do hip-hop covers along with Afrika- Nx and the Commons and at Greene Street Club, while Jews & Catholics, Hammer No More the Fingers and the Lights Fluorescent appear over at the Garage.

Citified, A Rooster for the Masses, and Decoration Ghost play Saturday at the Blind Tiger, while rising Nashville Americana musician Paul Burch plays a date with Corduroy Road at the Garage. One of my personal favorites, The Alcazar Hotel, will play the Flatiron Saturday night with Birds & Arrows. It’s just too bad that they’re up against the show to see this week, happening over at the Aquarius Music Hall. I might be a little late to the Lucero party, but I can only give them my highest endorsement. My Favorite Things Records hosts Senryu, a Knoxville indie-pop band described as having “overtones of insanity,” with Greensboro rockers Rough Hands. Also, join Mattie Sheets with Come Hell or High Water and Muddy Wheels at the Green Bean.

Finally, wind down a busy weekend with Marcus and Keith of the Mantras doing their acoustic duet Sunday night at Wahoo’s.
