extended play

by Ryan Snyder

You’re probably reading YES! Weekly while listening to Clay & Benjy play Tunes at Noon at Center City Park right now, so no need to mention them. When you’re done, ride the “Long Black Train” to see Josh Turner at Johnny & June’s. Wouldn’t it be funny if the Patrick Rock Band had their own Rock Band edition? It’d be called the Patrick Rock Band Rock Band. They’re at the Blind Tiger tonight.

Jazz Chronic will be smokin’ at the Blind Tiger this Thursday and if you want to know what, I’ll give you a hint: their keyboardist’s name is the Chron Don. Quench your munchies at Mellow Mushroom with Me & My Monkey, or walk the Galt Line with Captain Ronzo at Elliott’s Revue. I thought the New Heaven and the New Earth were being ironic when they listed their sound as “Regional Mexican/Celtic/ Classical” on their MySpace page, but dang if they weren’t telling the truth. They’re playing with Andrew Weathers at the Green Bean.

This Friday night is a little light, so it’s a good time to watch Mantras rock the Blind Tiger. Post punk fans check out Noise in Print at the Green Bean, or there’s Poe Mack at the Clubhouse for the hip-hop heads. A trio of great folk and Americana acts hit the Garage in Jennie Arnau, Nora Jane Struthers and Aaron Berg & the Heavy Love, but it gets noisy with Pacifist and Uzzard at the Wherehouse.

The big show this weekend is Jason Michael Carol on Saturday at the Country Corral, but J. Timber’s CD release party at Greene Street Club counts for something. King James, also known as Josh King of House of Fools, Urban Sophisticates’ Benton James and Caitlin Watkins support. The Othermothers with Decoration Ghost and Silver Bullets play the Blind Tiger. Roll the hard ‘r’ for reggaeton, as Tito “El Bambino” is en la casa at the Greensboro Coliseum. Kavish, Minimal Side Effects and the Malamondos are at the Garage, while Soundbombing does Saturday Night Jazz at Studio B. Based on it’s rich blue hue, this could either be a North Carolina wine or window cleaner. Get your booze on at the NC Wine Festival in Tanglewood. This year features Chairmen of the Board, Tammie Davis and Cheapshot.

Big Daddy Love play the Foothills Brewery Saturday night and J. Butler’s Bar and Grill on Sunday, while Legitimate Business hosts KEN Mode, Engineer, the Blue Letter and Low Sky on Monday.
