extended play

by Ryan Snyder

Experience music for the people today with Wickerbach’s noontime set in Center City Park and as always, Musical Playhouse provides an open forum for jazzhounds at the Green Bean. At Artistika, Tobacco spins some mind-bending beats with Dreamend and Junk Culture.

Actual Proof plays Thursday at the Blind Tiger and I’m 90 percent certain it’s the Charlotte funk-fusion group and not the Charlotte hip-hop duo. At the Green Bean, it’s BOGO on Matty Sheets with Come Hell or Highwater and Matty Sheets & the Blockheads. Friend House plays their EP release at CFBG with dirty blues trio the Old One-Two and Fort Wilson Riot.

Greensboro’s final First Friday of 2010 happens in Center City Park with another set by folkster Matty Sheets, along with golden-voiced Emily Stewart & Baby Teeth and the breathtaking indie septet Israel Darling. Later at the Blind Tiger, Simplified lays down some Jack Johnsonish groove, while folk rockers Black Swans and We Are the Willows play the Green Bean. Martha Bassett plays Late Night Live at Print Works, and in Winston-Salem, Captain Ronzo and the Galt Line set up at Elliott’s Revue.

Shake it fast, but watch ya self, because every beat junkie in town will be on hand to see DJ Icey and a horde of other DJs at Greene Street Club. Thank God for art-damaged hardcore at Legitimate Business, and in Winston-Salem, it’s Dark Water Rising, Chris Velan and Husky Burnett at the Garage.

This Sunday, it’s Hammertime at the Clubhouse. Six great blues bands are getting together to benefit Steve ‘Hammerhead’ Hammer’s fight against cancer, and you should too. Soulstress Mia Borders is backed by 15-year old piano upstart Sam Fribush, along with Sam Frazier, Jeff Sipe and Andy Ware at the Blind Tiger. American Joy with Sugar Glyder, the Future Is Me, I Was Totally Destroying It and Trophy Fire do it at Greene Street Club.

Is this thing on? Hit the Flatiron on Tuesday to celebrate the eighth anniversary of their venerable open mic night. Expect lots of your favorite local players to show up. Lastly, get your Americana and blues fix early in the week with Kevin Gordon and special guests 6 Day Bender at the Garage.
