extended play

by Ryan Snyder

There’s a chance it’s not sold out by now, so don’t forget about the Zac Brown Band and Blackberry Smoke tonight at the Lawrence Joel, presented by the secondworst beer behind Ed Hardy. There’s better brew at Elliot’s Revue with garage rockers Sleeping In the Aviary.

On Thursday, flatpicking master and expert fisherman Larry Keel headlines at the Blind Tiger with Porch Dog Revival in support. Hickry Hawkins & the Panty Sniffers, Filthy Still and others play the Coney Island Cockabilly Roadshow presented by Cockabilly Record at the Garage.

CFBG presents How Not to Name a Band with Colon Play, Burn doordoordoordoor and Morrowville.

If you haven’t heard, Ben Foster’s violence-againt-women fiasco at SXSW immediately disbanded Screeching Weasel and thus, got their Friday night gig at Greene Street canceled. Glenn Beck will kindly satiate your need for jackassery at the War Memorial though. Dressing as your favorite right-wing stereotype is suggested, but not required. Corey Smith returns to the Triad at Allure Nightlife. Hobex and Cravin’ Melon crank out ’90s blue-eyed soul at the Blind Tiger, while WUAG brings you awesome psychblues by the Curious Mystery with the Old One-Two and Abstract at Legitimate Business. Matty Sheets & the Blockheads, Megan Jean & the KFB and Shathouse Rats do the folk rock thing at the Flat Iron, while Illicitizen cooks up a new-wave mélange at Elliot’s Revue. There’s electro rock by Love Craft with electronic musicians Bolmongani and Acrobatics Microcosm at the Garage, while Artistika hosts what’s aruguably the can’t-miss show of the night with trance/darkwave artist Pictureplane.

On Saturday, Wyndy Trail Travelers, Play Dirty and Black Widow get together for a cystic fibrosis benefit at the Wherehouse. Songwriter Tyler Nail plays the Garage with “neo-retro” rockers Leaving Venus. Eclecticisms abound at the Blind Tiger with Songs of Water with Filthybird, and CFBG gets progressive with the Grand Ultimatum, Cytokine Storm and Inner Harbor.

The Gooseberry Jam, the Lug Nuts, the Allison King Band, the Willie Painter Band and many others play Boogie for Becky at the Blind Tiger on Sunday, while on Tuesday, you can experience heartbreaking playing of staggering genius by Deoro with Dave Eggar at the Garage.
