Find Yourself on the Visual Poetry Walk

(Last Updated On: October 13, 2016)

visual_poetry_wgotA Poetry Reading and a Silent Auction of unique Visual Poetry Boxes will conclude the first Visual Poetry Walk project of the Writers Group of the Triad. The VPW unites two different arts to surprise people as they walk downtown, following a map, reminiscent of poet Jane Hirschfield’s quote that “Poems are maps to the place you already are.”

Eleven local poets and artists who had never met before were paired for this project back in the summer. Together they collaborated to merge one’s poem with another’s art inspired by the words, to furnish a standing box, one of 11 on a walk through downtown. Each box is mapped out for walking the poetry and art trail through a mile of downtown Greensboro. A journal is included in each box for writing responses by observers who interact with the art and poetry.

After a three-month run, the Visual Poetry Walk is announcing its final two events, free and open to the public:

*Sun, Oct. 16 from 3-5 p.m. THIRD SUNDAY AT THREE POETRY READING at Scuppernong Books. VPW poets and artists will be reading and responding to the art.

*Sat, Nov. 5 from 4-6 p.m. SILENT AUCTION OF VISUAL POETRY BOXES at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. Enjoy some snacks, poetry, and art, with the boxes on display for auction bids following remarks by poets and artists. Meet the creatives who designed the art you might own!
