Antonina Whaples is a senior with a double major in studio art and philosophy at Wake Forest University. Her piece, “Unfulfilled Desires” was inspired by her recent foray into the world of figure competition. Figure competition could best be described as a cross between a beauty pageant and bodybuilding. Before her official diet began in January, Antonina began to acclimate herself to clean-living lifestyle by taking photographs of the food she couldn’t eat on her camera phone. “Unfulfilled Desires” chronicles all the food from the end of October through mid-December 2009 that she chose not to eat, although she was tempted to. It was most recently displayed in the exhibit Borrowed Time at Wake Forest’s new stART Gallery at Reynolda Village in Winston-Salem.
