GreenHill is proud to offer a Free Family Day – Animals Around the World on Friday, June 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Beauty of the Beast exhibition featuring NC artist-made work inspired by all kinds of animals from aardvarks to zebras. Beauty of the Beast opens at GreenHill on May 4, 2018, running through July 15, 2018, introducing visitors to a world of beasts who have captured the imagination of artists through the ages. This thematic exhibition explores the dualities of wild and tame, human and animal, as well as addressing the loss of animal habitats, animal cruelty and efforts to document and preserve species. Works featured include paintings, printmaking, drawing and sculptures inspired by all kinds of animals from aardvarks to zebras. On Free Family Day, GreenHill invites the community to experience all that GreenHill has to offer in celebration of the beauty of art, families, and diversity.
The day will start in the gallery with Animals Around the World Story Time just for preschoolers with popular stories read in Spanish, French, and Arabic. Afternoon programming will include animal games, music from around the world, animal bingo, and an artist demonstration by Cara Bevan who will delight visitors as she reveals her method of using gourds to create her amazingly life-like creatures. The event will culminate with a performance by Storyhound Theatre. The Storyhound Theatrical Detective Agency, led by artistic director Gabrielle Sinclair and managing director Jini Zlatniski, is a collaborative theatre company based in Greensboro on a mission to illuminate and reimagine form, community, and the creative process.
Throughout the day participants will be able to explore Beauty of the Beast using an Animal Scavenger Hunt to find favorite animals throughout the exhibition. In the studios, guests will create Endangered Species Animal Masks and collaborate on the Wide Wide World of Animals Mural. Stencils of favorite animals from around the world will be used to create a magical place in which lions and zebras can be friends, fish can fly and birds can swim under the sea.
