Get Ready for the 5th of July opening at the Hyers Theatre in Greensboro
The 5th of July is coming! Literally. On the 5th of July (July 5th, 6th, 7th at 7:30 and the 8that 2pm) the play: The 5th of July-A Comedy is opening at the Hyers Theatre in Greensboro at the Drama Center of the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center.
The topical comedy, after a sold out production run in Winston Salem, features an Indian-born actor (Pranav Bhandare) who plays the psychiatrist appointed by the U.S. Congress to be the unbiased doctor tasked with examining President Donald J. Trump! However, as he prepares to give his first live TV interview, after being fired by Trump, he finds himself in a strange, wacky situation at the TV station after it gets locked down by false reports of 4th of July fireworks mistaken for bombs.
Locked in the studio with him are a -good-ole-boy technician, a precocious 16- year-old Intern, her mother the station manager, and a Diversity Director with an over-active imagination. On top of this, Bill O’Rourke-lately of FOX News- is trying to break in the building, so he can do the interview and revive his career.
The show has impressed play-goers with its even-handed and satiric humor that goes for laughs, instead of making oft-repeated political points. “A Hoot” says YES Magazine. “I have never laughed so much in my entire life!” says April Marshall of SETC. “A wonderful comedy for Red State and Blue State people alike,” says Phyllis Whittley of AARP.
