Greensboro Farmers Market, Inc. Partners with Guilford County Community Network to Address Fresh Food Access Challenges in Guilford County

 gfcm-logo-sidebar-1Greensboro, NC –Greensboro Farmers Market, Inc. is proud to announce participation in Guilford Community Care Network (GGCN) Orange Card Program with a grant received from the Cone Health Foundation. This partnership will provide a new way for the 5,460 enrolled participants to access fresh foods.  GCCN is a non-profit program of community supporters that coordinates health care services for low-income or uninsured individuals in Guilford County.

Orange Card beneficiaries will receive $15 in tokens weekly to shop the market for fresh produce, breads, dairy products, eggs, meat, poultry, and seafood.  “Making local produce accessible and affordable for the community of greater Greensboro fulfills the Market’s Mission to ‘support better health through healthy eating’,” notes GFM, Inc. Executive Director Lee Mortensen.

Orange Card Tokens may be used to purchase fresh foods beginning on Wednesday, November 23, 2016.  and in combination with the Market’s Pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Market. Orange Card holders must present their GCCN Orange Card and ID at the manager’s station during Wednesday Market hours, 8 am – 1 pm. Each token is valued at one dollar and may be used in combination with cash or change as vendors will not give change back on Market Tokens.  Orange Card Market Tokens may be used at participating vendors displaying Orange Card token signs and tokens maybe used at both Wednesday and Saturday Markets.

The Orange Card Program is a pilot program and is scheduled to run through November 2017 and all Orange Card Tokens must be used by the end of November 2017. Tokens will only be available on Wednesdays until December 28th, 2016, the end of Mid-Week Market, and then tokens may be obtained on Saturday Markets 7am-12 noon until Wednesday Markets re-open on April 19th, 2017.
