HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 21, 2018 – High Point University ’s Department of Theatre and Dance will reimagine man’s quest into the American frontier through the comedy, “Men on Boats” by Jaclyn Backhaus.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4-10 in the Empty Space Theatre on HPU’s campus. Complimentary tickets are available at www.highpoint.edu/theatre or by contacting the box office at 336-841-4636.
“Men on Boats” is the history of an 1869 expedition, when 10 daring volunteers set out to explore the Colorado River and Grand Canyon for the very first time. (Kind of.) They rode rapids, scaled canyons, tamed wildlife, and left their mark on virgin territory, in a manner of speaking. Led by a one-armed captain, they battled nature, history and their own cluelessness on this historic voyage.
This inventive and imaginative retelling, however, includes no men. The hilarious adventure features a cast of 10 fearless women who recreate this daring expedition while offering gentle satire and timely perspective on what happens when you let men explore the world.
“This is a perfect play for High Point University Theatre,” says Jay Putnam, associate professor of theatre, who is directing the show. “We’ve got such strong and bold young women training in this department, and ‘Men on Boats’ offers so many delightful challenges for them all. We’re transforming the Empty Space Theatre and presenting this production in the round, so audiences will surround the canyons and rapids of the Colorado.”
The cast includes HPU seniors Gabby Busch, Emma DiMaio and Olivia Scrivner; juniors Olivia Leenhouts, Madison Steiner and Christine Watt; sophomore Grace Stroud; and freshmen Abby Comer, Emmie D’Amico and Sarah Dahlberg. The stage managers are freshmen Skye Henley and Hailey Turner. The creative team includes HPU faculty and staff members Matthew Emerson, Gay Hensley, Liz Stewart and Russell Hill. The play is directed by Jay Putnam, associate professor of theatre.
