High School Student Facing Murder Charge for Shooting Food Lion Security Guard


“GREENSBORO, NC (October 18, 2016) –   A high school student was arrested earlier today and charged with First Degree Murder for fatally shooting Anthony Charles Smith on Oct. 8.

Nature Maurice Williams, 16, who attends Eastern Guilford High School, was taken into custody without incident from his home at 1151 Langston Dr. at approximately 4 pm.

Tips from the public spurred by extensive media coverage of the shooting assisted detectives in connecting Williams to the shooting that occurred at the Food Lion on 2316 E. Market St., where Smith was performing duties as a security guard

Officers arrived at the business at 7:30 pm. on Oct. 8, and located Smith, 51, unresponsive in the vestibule of the store, suffering from a single gunshot wound to his head. Smith was employed by Guard One Security and was working as an armed uniformed security guard at the time of the shooting. He was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries and died upon arrival.

Williams is also charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon for taking Smith’s firearm. The firearm has  not been recovered.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation and apprehension.
