J & S CAFETERIAS ANNOUNCE HICKORY LOCATION CLOSING WITH REVITALIZED CONCEPT TO OPEN IN COMING MONTHS
High Point, NC – J & S Cafeterias, Inc. announced today that their Hickory, NC location at 1940 13th Avenue Dr SE, will permanently close on Sunday, July 8. President and CEO, Fagg Nowlan says the company plans on opening a new Hickory J & S location with an updated design in coming months.
The first J & S Cafeteria opened in Asheville in 1984 as a fresh, whole-foods alternative to fast food. A natural hit with North Carolinians, the innovative dining hall concept with home-cooked quality quickly expanded to several cities across the state. Since opening its doors in June of 1991, the Hickory location has served almost 14.5 million customers. Nowlan recalls the immense popularity of the Hickory J & S necessitated devising a hilltop walkie-talkie system to guide guests to highly sought-after parking spots. The traffic generated by the restaurant stimulated phenomenal development to the surrounding area.

Now, almost 30 years later, the antiquated building can sadly no longer serve guests properly. Though incredibly satisfied with their long-time landlords, Operations Manager Jeffrey Lord points to the immense size of the 13,000 square foot building as a key reason in changing venues. The 6,000 sqft. kitchen now poses a risk to the company’s high service standards; specifically as the new conceptualization of J & S is implemented. With a new direction soon to be unveiled, J & S is refocusing energy on service quality and providing an atmosphere as fresh and inviting as their from-scratch food.
Excited to better accommodate Hickory’s growing community, the local business is scouting through several development prospects. While reopening in a timely manner is high priority, they are determined to ensure the next 30 years in Hickory are as successful as the last. Lord says, “Building a safe and well-planned environment is critical in maintaining the strong, dedicated team who are at the heart of what we do.” Management hopes to quickly transition the fantastic team of Hickory employees, with temporary relocations to other sites in the interim. Customers are also invited to the J & S locations in Deep River, South Asheville, and River Ridge to enjoy the locally-sourced foods, prepared fresh and from scratch.
J & S Cafeteria Hickory will close its doors this Sunday, with plans to begin construction in a new location imminently. Nowlan would like a fully functioning facility returned to Hickory by early Summer 2019 at the latest.
