Shaina Machlus Stylist

After spending a year traveling through 20 different countries, Shaina Machlus wanted to be part of a strong community and to be a positive influence. Though she hadn’t considered cutting hair professionally, it was something she enjoyed since middle school, bartering haircuts through college and styling hair throughout her trip. Her friend Cara Craig encouraged her to come work at Figaro’s, and Machlus moved back to Greensboro to attend Leon’s, where she recently graduated and received the Elite Student Award. She said her degrees from Guilford College in biology and chemistry helped prepare her. “People don’t think about that hair is very personal, political and intellectual,” Machlus said. “Hair is one of the most essential parts of our identity.” She loves being part of a safe space, meeting a range of people at Figaro’s, and having a trade using her hands — Machlus is also the drummer for Serious Bangs and uses her hands to garden, too.
