Few professors are as involved in the broader community as Spoma Jovanovic, associate professor of communication studies at UNCG. She has been working with Dudley High School students for years advocating for bus shelters, helped change the rules in Center City Park to allow political speech, co-taught the intercampus Reclaiming Democracy course, was part of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and is involved with the Interactive Resource Center, participatory budgeting and Occupy Greensboro. “I’m just so lucky to be in a city where people are doing amazing things all the time,” she said. “What’s exciting is the energy that’s being activated from one project to the next. The time is ripe for political participation.” The North Carolina Campus Compact recently honored Jovanovic for her “leadership in community engagement and service.” She also successfully pushed to have community-engaged scholarship be considered during tenure and promotion guidelines, and incorporates grassroots community work into her curriculums.
