Beginning its previews this Wednesday and running through Oct. 16 is Triad Stage’s first show of the season at Hanesbrands Theatre in Winston-Salem: The Mystery of Irma Vep. This is another one of my favorite shows and I was thrilled when I saw Triad Stage was bringing it back. Full of vampires, werewolves, mummies and bad puns, the parody of old Victorian “penny dreadfuls” and Hollywood horror films is a hilarious romp through England and Egypt. Only two actors take on the seven roles and dozens of costume changes for a fast-paced and hilarious evening.

Friday through Sunday, The Drama Center Children’s Theatre presents Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures in the Odell Auditorium at Greensboro College. The lively adaptation of the famous classic The Wind in the Willows is set in the 1950s and centers on a manic, fast-driving Mr. Toad, who scares his friends and gets into trouble.

Also new on Friday is Community Theatre of Greensboro’s Youth Theatre production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which will run Friday through Oct. 16. In the adaptation of Mark Twain’s classic, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Becky Thatcher go on a great summer adventure full of mischief, love and buried treasure.

Theatre Alliance is getting in the Halloween spirit early with a stage reading of Slasher Saturday. Running for one performance only, the thriller with tongue-in-cheek silliness features the star of a low-budget slasher flick and her mother, who will do anything to keep her from making her big break.

Also on Saturday, High Point Theatre is gearing up for the first ever High Point Has Talent event. The 25 performers selected as finalists, after an extensive auditioning process, come from all walks of life, ranging from 12 years old to mid-70’s. High Point Has Talent will feature performances by singers, dancers, stand-up comics, musicians and singer/songwriters, with music ranging from classical, to patriotic, to hip-hop.

In other news, Twin City Stage will hold auditions for Macy’s Yes, Virginia: The Musical on Monday, Oct. 10, at the Arts Council Theatre, 610 Coliseum Drive in Winston-Salem. Auditions for actors ages 7-15 will begin at 5:30 p.m., and auditions for actors 16 and up will begin at 7:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary and everyone is welcome to audition.
