The Heavy Rebel Weekender rolls into Winston-Salem July 2-4
From a grassroots event, supported by word of mouth and the internet, to an international event with support from “high gloss mags”, hard cover books and attendees from various continents. The HRW was originally the idea of Mike Martin, a Winston-Salem local business owner/ Auto Mechanic who was booking shows at the Millennium Center as often as possible. Mike wanted to bring a festival-type event to his area.
The HRW in 2001 was organized, promoted, planned and executed in under 6 months, with less money than a decent used Honda would cost (you get the point). Dave and Mike pooled their resources, connections and talents and booked over 45 bands for three days on three stages. Along the way vendors, tattoo artists and a custom car show were added. The first HRW drew over 650 attendees from all over the US! When the smoke had cleared, the stages were quiet and the beer cans swept, Mike and Dave realized they had pulled off an amazing party where everyone felt like friends!
Over the past decade, the HRW has taken on more bands, side show acts, has add burlesque acts and even three marriages performed at the event! The Crossroads Guitar Contest has grown into the premier event to see and to be-seen-in. Featuring the bravest of HRW showcasing their skills in front of 1,000 plus crowds, while playing to unknown back lines provided by Dave Quick himself. Other novel events are also present and add to the feel of the HRW. These events give HRW the unique feel present every year. From mud wrestling to banana pudding eating to a full blown Haunted house Heavy Rebel offers unique, fun, funny and occasionally “disturbing” events.
2010 is here and so is the 10th annual HRW! The “Wiggle Room” will be full of burlesque dancers and a live DJ! Of course, a full bar will be present to fulfill all your drink needs, so guys, get ready for a room of dancing women shaking what the good Lord gave’ em! More bands, more acts, more music, more cars, more events..more! Be sure to get your tickets and book your room! More info can be found at www.heavyrebel.net.
