WSNB, a four-piece blues band from Morganton, won the 25 th Annual PBPS Blues Challenge, held at Zion Bar & Grille in Greensboro on Sunday.

Lawyers, Guns and Money, from Greensboro, finished in second place.

Foothills Blues Society, featuring 10-year old guitarist Kelly Carlisle, from Surry County, captured the third-place spot.

WSNB, as first-place finishers in the annual Blues Challenge, will represent the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn. Feb. 1-5, 2011. They will also perform at the 25th Annual Carolina Blues Festival, scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 2011 in downtown Greensboro.

WSNB had finished second in the Blues Challenge in 2008. The band is comprised of harp player/singer Willie Shane Johnston, guitarist Nathan “Tiny Terror” Brown, bassist Clay Ford and drummer Jason Gardner.

Second-place finishers Lawyers Guns & Money feature a couple of well traveled local musicians. Guitarist Terry VunCannon has performed with many area blues musicians such as Matt Hill, Bubba Klinefelter and Logie Meacham. Bassist/vocalist/bandleader Stan Atwell has performed in numerous bands as well. LG&M also features guitarist Rob Slater and drummer Mike Thomas. The quartet finished third in the 2009 Blues Challenge and currently host the Thursday night blues jam at Zion Bar & Grille. Newcomers Foothills Blues Society placed third in their first year in the band competition.

In addition to the aforementioned 10-year old guitarist Carlisle, the band also features Kelly’s father John Carlisle on drums, vocals and guitar, Mark Brown on keyboards, Larry Wilson on harp and guitar and Rick Caudill on bass.
