New Vegetarian Restaurant To Open Doors Downtown

A new vegetarian restaurant in downtown Winston-Salem officially opened with a ribbon-cutting celebration at 10:30 am Sept. 27 . Owners Darryl and Nanette Murray have announced that the Grilled Asparagus, located at 239 W. 4 th St. between Cherry and Trade streets, will be downtown’s first vegetarian establishment.

Darryl Murray works to promote healthy eating and local, organic food. Alongside vegetarian options, there will be vegan and gluten-free choices. The lunch menu is set up for a quick meal for those in a hurry, and evening entertainment will be provided for a slower-paced dinner. On the schedule are poetry & spoken word, jazz and blues. Menu items include wraps, salads, burgers, hummus and other specialty items such as barbecue tofu and purple sweet-potato fries.

The Murrays are excited to reach out to the Winston-Salem community and bring customers “not just a restaurant, but an experience.” They also are thrilled and energized to be downtown. “I just love the downtown area so much, it’s a great opportunity and there is so much warmness in downtown.”

Murray is a graduate of the Triad Community Kitchen program of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina and is the first graduate to open his own restaurant. Murray said he will staff his restaurant with graduates from the Triad Community Kitchen program as well as individuals enrolled with the Goodwill Industries programs.
