Historic Glenwood homes saved from path of UNCG’s progress

Blake Moving Co. of Greensboro was expected to move three historic houses from the path of the impending UNCG mixed-used village development project in the Glenwood neighborhood over the past weekend and possibly through Monday. UNCG is a partner in the effort. The houses — two Craftsman bungalows and a Queen Anne cottage — of 1920s and 1930s vintage are being relocated from the 800 blocks of Highland Avenue and Gregory Street to vacant lots on the 800 block of nearby Haywood Street. Financing the move is the Preservation Greensboro Development Fund, according to a press release. The benefits of the effort, as expressed by the preservation group, is saving houses from destruction, saving building materials from being sent to the landfill and enhancing the vitality of the neighborhood by preserving “the craftsmanship and charm of historic homes.” A fourth house on Haywood Street is being renovated by the development fund.

All four houses will be available for sale in the coming year.
