Deviating slightly from the norm in this St. Patrick’s Day Edition of Served, I bring attention to a friend in need. Pretty much everyone in the Triad restaurant biz knows Mary Lacklen, proprietess of Bert’s Seafood Grille in Greensboro. Like thousands of other folks, I had the pleasure of serving with her back at Mosaic and later at Bert’s when it took over the space on West Market Street.

My old boss has gotten sick, struck with an autoimmune form of liver disease. And anyone who knows Mary knows she will not abide sickness. A group of her friends has put together a benefit on Sunday at the Painted Plate at noon. It’s a brunch, by the way, which is funny because working brunch with Mary was kind of a nightmare.

Moving on: Featured dishes for Downtown Winston-Salem’s Big Eat this week are the Cuban pulled pork plate with spinach, black beans, rice and cornbread at Rana Loca, and a sweet deal — literally! — at Wolfie’s Frozen Custard: half-off sundaes.

Jamestown has gotten a coffee shop.

Southern Roots, owned by Lisa Hawley and Mary Ragsdale at 119 E. Main St., will serve breakfast and lunch as well as a slate of caffeinated goodies.

And Dewey’s reminds us that Easter is around the corner with a liost of gift baskets available at Dewey’s outlets and through the website, www.deweys.com.

Wednesday — which some may know as St. Patrick’s Day — sees, appropriately, Green Drinks Greensboro getting together at 5:30 p.m. at the Mellow Mushroom. And Whole Foods Market in Winston- Salem hosts the Green Mash Bash beginning at 3:30 p.m., an afternoon event with stunt eating (mashed potatoes!) and samples (Irish cheddar, soda bread corned beef and green beer).

Sober up on Thursday at Whole Foods with a Spring Cooking Class at 6 p,m, Register at the customer service desk or call 336.722.9233.

Whole Foods hits the trifecta with live music on Friday: an in-store performance by Too Human.

Also beginning on Friday, Total Wine & More tastes red and white Bordeaux all weekend long.

Tuesday, by the way, is Free Ice Cream Cone Day at all Ben & Jerry’s locations. Along for the ride is Anna Mae Breads, offering samples and taking Easter orders at the Greensboro location.
