By now you’ve likely heard of the new Double Down chicken sandwich at KFC: bacon and cheese sandwiched by two chicken breasts. The fried version has more than 500 calories and 32 grams of fat, while the grilled “bunless” sandwich has “just” 460 calories and 23 grams of fat. Enjoy!

But here in the Triad we like it fresh and local, right? So I’ll be sure to see you at the Basil & Beyond Herb Festival on Thursday morning at Greensboro’s Greek Orthodox Church at the corner of Friendly and Westridge avenues. Things get rolling at 7 a.m.

Also on Thursday, Winston-Salem’s Whole Foods Market goes tax free on all purchases — it is April 15, after all — and Undercurrent Restaurant in Greensboro holds a wine dinner featuring vintages from Australia and New Zealand. All weekend long Total Wine & More’s three Triad locations will be tasting green wines — and by “green” they mean organic and sustainable.

On Friday, Noble’s Grill busts out a Tax Day Menu where $10.40 gets you a meal. And it’s Greenhouse Vegetable Day at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market with free tomato sandwiches beginning at 11 a.m.

Also, Wake Forest celebrates Earth Day with more than 100 vendors and tents. And downtown Asheboro sees the Chili Cookoff, which this year will include a whole lot more than chili. Though there will definitely be chili. And, oddly enough, beer.

On Tuesday, Krankie’s Farmers Market opens for the season in downtown Winston-Salem.
