The big food-related news this week is out of Greensboro: The Opening of the newest Whole Foods Market in the chain, at Friendly Center. It happens Thursday morning, with a bread-breaking ceremony at 8 a.m. and the doors opening at 9. See preview at left.

But there’s lots more to talk about. Krispy Kreme has launched a line of Fruit-Stand Flavor doughnuts and Chillers, including Strawberry Kreme Pie and strawberry cake with cream-cheese icing, as well as frozen lemonade and frozen Very Berry Chillers.

Coffee with your doughnuts? Krankies announces its newest bean, Rwanda Gishamwana from east Africa — “sweet and balanced with flavors of orange, grapefruit and peach,” according to the website.

The Piedmont triad Farmers Market holds Greenhouse Veggie Day on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. And the Grove Winery holds a Tweet-up at 6 p.m. focusing on its new cabernet franc.

On Saturday, PTFM has Gourd Day beginning at 8 a.m. Old Salem Museum & Gardens has Lunch With Lincoln at noon. See if you can still get a seta by calling 336.721.7399. And the Fresh Market on Greensboro’s Highwoods Boulevard holds an in-0store cooking demo featuring angel-hair pasta with tuna and capers, and Mediterranean deviled eggs from 3-6 p.m.

Total wine & More tastes Bushmills Irish whiskey, Siesta Key rum and wines of Italy and South American all weekend long at all three Triad locations.

Sunday is Crab Fest at King’s Crab Shack in downtown Winston- Salem, featuring that most succulent of shellfish the soft-she crab, in season now. Chef Will Kingery will be on hand, as well as NC crab farmers, with music by the Heath Combs & the Twin City Buskers, and a screening of a documentary about the crabs. There will also be soft-shell crab sandwiches. The action starts at 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, Table 16 in Greensboro holds a wine dinner featuring the wines of northern Italy at 6:30 p.m. Call the restaurant at 336.279.8525 for a reservation.

Room for one more? Vanilla prices are booming after a poor harvest this year. Bad news for ice cream lovers.
