Food is a social bonding agent. It’s necessary to live, and also engages us with our world.

A great way to start is with Guilford County Go Red for Women Educational Expo and Luncheon on Wednesday. The Fresh Market on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro is teaming up with the American Heart Association to launch the event. Starting at 9 a.m., the day’s activities include breakfast, shopping tours, lunch, chef demonstrations, a coffee and chocolate discussion and wine tasting. For details, visit thefreshmarket.com.

The Greensboro Farmers Curb Market celebrates strawberries on Saturday with a pancake picnic held in partnership with the Aycock Neighborhood Association. Cecelia Thompson will prepare Old Mill of Guilford whole wheat pancakes that will be topped by locally grown strawberries. Plates go for $3 each.

Inside, Wendy Hayton will be dipping fresh strawberries in chocolate.

Sunday, May 13, is Mothers’ Day, of course.

Pick a place that is special or surprising to take your mother. It doesn’t really matter where, as long as it’s meaningful to her.

Some ideas include WS Prime in Winston- Salem or Table 16 in Greensboro.

WS Prime’s Mothers’ Day brunch includes roast prime rib, fruit-filled blintzes, artisan cheeses, chocolate cake and a host of other delectables. Call 336.725.3500 for prices and reservations.

Table 16 is also taking reservations at 336.279.8525. This month, the restaurant is highlighting local ingredients, including apples from Foggy Ridge Cider, honey from Kiss Me Farms, poultry from Ashley Farms, local produce from the Downtown Farmers Market, quail from Manchester Farms, eggs from Massey Creek Farms and low country shellfish. Table 116 features a slew of entrees this month, including Columbia River salmon with honey, T-bone steak with feta fries, NC flounder with pickled fennel, and duck breast with bosc pear.

Smitty’s Notes reports that a tapas bar is opening in the former Lucky Bleu location at 271 W. 4th St. this month and that Downtown Brody’s bar is under renovation a couple doors down at 249 W. 4th St.

On the road-food front, Sheetz is making energy drink punches, mixing Red Bull with watermelon, raspberry and mint flavors.

Everybody have a great week, and remember to eat with zest.
