Triad Dj Profile
DJ handle: DJ Trizzak What it means: One day I was listening to “4, 3, 2, 1” by LL Cool J and Redman said “blaze the hot triz-ack” in his verse. So since my name is Zack, I started scratching just the Zack part of the record, and I was like “COOL! I can scratch my name now!”
Real name: Zack Davis
What I play: Hip hop/turntablism and drum and bass.
Catch me at: I play regularly at East End Martini Bar in Chapel Hill on Saturday nights and I DJ regularly for my hip-hop groups Social Memory Complex and my new supergroup StereoGram, so I do a lot of live shows. I am also a father of three, so I haven’t been playing at clubs as much as I used too.
Upcoming shows: Oct. 23 at Green Street Club for the Method Man and Redman Show with my group StereoGram and every Saturday night at East End Martini Bar in Chapel Hill.
Got in the game: I started DJing in 1997.
Why I do it: I started because it looked like the coolest job ever.
Influences: I could go on for days.
First pro gig: 2001 at the Creedmoore Clubhouse, a prolific NC rave spot.
Favorite technique: It’s a scratch technique called “orbits.” When you do ‘em fast, it sounds like you have 100 fingers.
Signature mix: I’m most proud of my Diablo Archer — Wake-Up Call mixtape. It was my first mixtape from a hip-hop artist. He was the first cat who recognized the skills and let me mix up some of his dopest material. It was also my first professionally released mixtape.
Personal playlist: I’m really big on the “breaking records” aspect of DJing, which is when you play artists at the club that nobody has heard of before and making them known.
My gear: Two Technics 1200mk5 turntables, Rane TTM 56 scratch mixer, Ortofon and Shure needles, Serato Scratch Live, Akai MPC series, Korg Nano Pad, RS-16x Virtual MPC, Reason 4, Recycle, Guru, Audacity, Garage Band, Pro Tools and two apple G4 Powerbooks.
