Name: Josh Neas

DJ Handle: J.

Catch me on: WQFS Greensboro, 90.9 FM, Guilford College Radio.

Show title: J’s Indie/ Rock Mayhem

Show time: Wednesday nights, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

Request line: 336.316.2444

What I play: A mix of college and indie rock, alt-country, powerpop, punk and postpunk and smatterings of folk and hip hop.

What you’ll hear: the Replacements, the Afghan Whigs, Son Volt, Teenage Fanclub, Wire, New Pornographers, Public Enemy, El-P, Vic Chesnutt, Fugazi and a constantly rotating collection of new and other classic material.

Why I play it: It’s what I like. I cart a whole chunk of my own collection up to the station each week, so a lot of what you hear is music I personally dig. Every two-hour show is like a personal mixtape from me to the listeners.

Favorite thing about being a DJ: Without question phone calls from listeners. Whether they’re calling up because they heard something they really liked, or calling to rave about a band we both love, it gives me a wonderful sense of community between myself and the audience. Most college radio listeners are music geeks, just like all the DJs at the station, so it’s nice to hear from them.

How I got started: I saw a flier for the station my first freshman semester at Guilford College. My friend and I wound up getting a show together from 2 a.m.-

4 a.m. on Friday mornings. After pulling a marathon eight-hour show our first night when several DJs after us failed to show up, the management gave us first dibs on a Friday evening spot when it opened. I haven’t stopped since.

Service time: 11 and a half years.

Album recommendations: Apex Manor’s The Year of Magical Drinking which will be out later in January on Merge Records. The Replacements — Pleased to Meet Me. Afghan Whigs — Gentlemen, El-P — I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. Tiger Bear Wolf — Tiger Bear Wolf.

Other DJs to check out: I sometimes refer to us as the indie-rock block on WQFS: Chuck Carroll, Thursdays at 6 p.m. and “Mad Dog and the Friday Night Rock Party”, Fridays at 6 p.m.

I’d like to add: I’ve been blogging my radio show for over six years at, so you can check out playlists and podcasts and links to some of my other writing for over there. Also, Paul Westerberg, you have an open invite to be a guest on my show.
