Name: Daniel Yount

Tune it to: WUAG 103.1

Show title: “The World Music, Jazz and New Orleans Show”

Show time: I generally sub for people when needed, so it’s a little random

Request line: 336.334.5450

What I play: World music, jazz music and New Orleans music

What you’ll hear: Examples could be anything from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Toumani Diabate to John Coltrane to the Rebirth Brass Band.

Why I play it: This is what I like and although WUAG does a great job of playing this kind of stuff, you really don’t hear much of it on any other stations in the Greensboro area.

Best thing about DJing: It’s just a blast trying to make a real show out of it, hoping that it all flows together nicely. It also gives you time to sit down and do nothing but listen to music for at least two hours. You can usually find something good in the station that you’ve never heard before.

How I got started: I got started by asking if I could fill in during this past winter break while most of the students were out of town and WUAG was looking for people to fill in. I had a show once a week for four weeks during UNCG’s winter break.

Album recommendations: Some great albums that I found at WUAG were Djelika by Toumani Diabate, which is a traditional West African (Malian) recording that just features kora, balafon and ngoni. I also enjoyed some cuts off the Medeski Martin & Wood album Uninvisible.

Also check out: DJ Kaz’s show, which is on WUAG from 4-7 p.m. on Sundays.
