triad dj profile
DJ handle: Player One
What it means: Who didn’t grow up playing video games?
Real name: Mike Mahoney
What I play: Dubstep, house, pop, hip hop, electronica
Catch me at: Vintage 301 in Greensboro on Fridays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Upcoming shows: In addition to Vintage 301, I’m at Snack Bar on Thursday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., and the iCandy Galleria at Vintage 301 on First Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight.
Got in the game: My foray into DJing came during college at UNC. I was working at the student-run record label Vinyl Records UNC, and our in-house sound engineer had some Numark Direct Drive turntables and a mixer with a couple of records for sale. So I bought them, and the rest is history.
Why I do it: When you’re young, the first thing kids normally want to be when they “grow up” is a fireman, policeman, doctor, lawyer or astronaut. I, however, have wanted to become a DJ from day one. My big inspiration was seeing Omar Epps spin in the 1992 crime drama Juice — easily Tupac’s best role in a movie, by the way.
Influences: I am a huge fan of producers, so I would have to say Bloodshy & Avant, Diplo, Joker, A-Trak, the Bug and Bassnectar.
First pro gig: Actually, my professional career has just started recently with my residency at Vintage 301 about a month ago. Before that I was strictly a houseparty DJ.
Favorite technique: It’s a tie between scratching and beat-matching.
Signature mix: Last Friday I definitely played the best set of my career at Vintage 301, but forgot to record it.
Personal playlist: Like most DJs, I keep an eclectic mix of genres playing on my iPod constantly — anything from folk to hard house. What I’ve really been into here lately is progressive metal, shoegaze, traditional folk, synth pop and, of course, hip hop.
Favorite albums: Stevie Wonder — Innervisions, Nick Lowe — Labour of Lust, Radiohead — Kid A, Björk — Post, the Get Up Kids — Four Minute Mile
My gear: Technics 1200M3D turntable, Stanton M 304 mixer, M-Audio Axiom 25 Midi keyboard, Korg Kaossilator and Skullcandy Hesh headphones
I’d like to add: If you would like to get in contact with me in regards to a gig, please find me on Facebook or leave a comment on my SoundCloud (above).
