DJ ALVIN SHAVERS

DJ handle: DJ Alvin Shavers

What it means: Ha!

Real name: Alvin James Shavers

What I play: Deep, soulful house music

Catch me at: Artistika Nightclub in downtown Greensboro every second Friday of the month!

On air: I also have a weekly radio show on 90.1 called “The Saturday Nite House Party” from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. with DJ Real.

Got in the game: About three years ago

Why I do it: Because I collected an incredible amount of good house music and I wanted people to listen to something other than what’s being played on the radio or other popular music right now.

Influences: Wow. Osunlade, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Atjazz, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Armand Van Helden, Timmy Regisford, Quentin Harris, Julius the Mad Thinker, DJ Spinna, Karizma, Terry Hunter, Kaskade and Black Coffee. All of these artists are worldwide legends of house music and they all influenced me deeply.

First pro gig: Oh man, it was three years ago in a Youngstown, Ohio place called Baily’s Pub. The place rocked!

Studio work: I’m working on a lot of remixes for Winter Music Conference in Miami!

Favorite technique: I play with CDJs.

There’s a lot of cool tricks I can do on them.

Signature mix: Hmm. I’d have to say my newest mix. It’s titled “Is It Okay to Get LOUD??????” My mentors always believed that being a DJ is simple as mixing a song in as soon as another one ends but blending two or three songs together is magical.

Personal playlist: Coming from Cleveland, I listen to a lot of soulful music and rock. I also like bluegrass and country, believe it or not.

My gear: Two Denon DN-S3500s and a Behringer DDM4000 mixer. I’ve been using Traktor Scratch Pro 2 a lot recently because burning CDs take a lot of time!

Favorite albums: I’ve got two favorites! De La Soul — Stakes Is High and Incognito — Tokyo Live 1996.
