Everybody wants to be a rock journalist, to cover the big band on a huge international tour, to nail the incisive interview with a reclusive and complicated star, to cut through the nonsense of the industry and get to the heart of the music — at least that’s how it was when I was coming up and, judging by the slew of freelance requests I get, how it still is today. Back then, the plum gig was at Rolling Stone, natch, the bible of rock-n-roll culture. Though the mag has slipped a bit in the last decade or so, it’s still a pretty sweet byline — ask 23-year-old Theo Wenner, RS’s newest freelance photographer who has shot Ke$ha, MGMT and Corrine Bailey Rae for the magazine in recent months. Wenner, of course, is the son of RS founder and publisher Jann, which helped him land his career-making internship with the magazine in 2006. But to his credit, the kids has also shot for Vanity Fair and some artsy-fartsy French biannual glossy. Also: Who’s MGMT?
