CLARIFYING WHAT IS UNSAID IN OUR DIALOGUE ABOUT RACE

Race is a sensitive topic in the Piedmont Triad, as Greensboro blogger Ed Cone tried to explain in a column in Sunday’s News & Record about the now notorious Tabor-Spencer affray: “Race also plays a role in this story. Spencer is black, Tabor is white; Tabor says he acted to protect his (white) wife from a dangerous (black) man, which is about as fraught as things get in this country.” As Cone reported on his blog the next day, Tabor didn’t take too kindly to the characterization: “Tabor says he never said Spencer was black, or that Spencer was dangerous, and demanded a retraction.” Cone’s response: “No retraction needed, or forthcoming.” Doug Clark, an editor for the paper’s opinion section, apparently agreed. Lots of verbiage is expended in the comment thread on various nuances surrounding whether Cone projected race onto Tabor’s actions, but the columnist gets in the best line of all when he closes the post thusly: “Tabor then called the publisher, Robin Saul, who agreed to run a clarification saying that Tabor did not say the things that nobody said he said.”
