A 2007 letter from a British reporter could spell trouble for News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch and Prime Minister David Cameron. Published on Tuesday by the Guardian, the letter from reporter Clive Goodman to a human resources director at News of the World states that the editor — Andy Coulson, who would go on to serve as Cameron’s communication director — promised that he could have his job back if he did not implicate the newspaper during a hearing related to his “plea of guilty to conspiracy to intercept the voicemail messages of three employees of the royal family.” The more familiar term is “hacking.” More damaging perhaps, the letter alleges that other employees were “carrying out the same illegal procedures,” and that “this practice was widely discussed in the daily editorial conference until explicit reference to it was banned by the editor.”
