GREENSBORO CITY COUNCIL FOLLIES: RE-DO
Score a win for Greensboro blogger GeorgeHartzman, whose Socratic tirades in front of citycouncil can sometimes come across as hyperbolic.Hartzman vocally questioned whether MayorRobbie Perkins should be voting on an economicincentives payout to a Park View Development, the business entity for Center Point — for whichPerkins serves as a listing agent in his role as acommercial real estate broker — at an April 3council meeting.
Perkins also happens to live in thebuilding. Maybe it’s Hartzman’s history of repeatedand numerous allegations that led interim CityAttorney Jamiah Waterman to rule during theApril 3 city council meeting that Perkins had nocon ict of interest. Three days later Watermanwas eating his opinion: “Upon further re ection, itcan reasonably be argued that Mayor Perkins wassubjected to a potential nancial detriment, e.g.the potential loss of his real estate listings with ParkView Development LLC. As such, I am revising myprior opinion to re ect that Mayor Perkins appearsto have an impermissible con ict of interest inthis matter. While the item passed unanimously, Iam recommending that: (1) on April 16th the citycouncil votes to excuse Mayor Perkins from thisitem; and (2) the remaining disinterested councilmembers vote on the amendment to the generalfund budget.”
