white noise: roch steady

News and views from inside the media bubble

It’s true that I have often butted heads with Greensboro blogger, self-appointed ombudsman at large and overall smug loudmouth Roch Smith Jr. on a number of issues. But beneath our gentle back-and-forth banter there is, I believe, a mutual respect. So I’m going to give due credit to Smith for his coverage of the 2011 Greensboro municipal election on hs blog, roch101.

blogspot.com, which included this year a separate election website, www.greensborocouncilcandidates.com, with candidate profiles, and in the run-up to Election Day a large trove of useful posts including finance reports, media criticism, fact-checking and, yes, some high-minded pros elytizing.

I think he even broke some news. It’s a remarkable contribution, especially considering he is a one-man show who is not getting paid for his efforts.

In the old days, of course, media outlets competed for coverage of events like municipal elections, but in the modern era, with newspaper staffs scaled back to skeleton crews, bureaus shuttering and page counts down across the board, it’s nice to have an extra set of hands on deck, particularly when it’s actual, real information being doled out instead of propoganda and hyperbole. Hat tip, Roch Smith Jr. Nice work this year, buddy.
