Wild Birds Unlimited of Greensboro owner Barbara Haralson Receives Prestigious Recognition
Greensboro, NC – Barbara Haralson, owner of the Greensboro Wild Birds Unlimited store, recently received the prestigious Wild Birds Unlimited Friend to the Environment Award at the 2018 Enterprise Leadership Conference. This award recognizes one Wild Birds Unlimited franchise store owner each year who exemplifies the company mission to “bring people and nature together.”
Wild Birds Unlimited of Greensboro owner Barbara Haralson Honored with Friend to the Environment Award at Annual Conference
Haralson installed, monitored and maintained more than 100 Eastern Bluebird nest boxes in Guilford County, including those at Bryan Park, BurMil Park and the Bog Garden.
Haralson has also installed nest boxes at Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, which were painted by participants in the Grief Share program. She has worked continuously with Hospice to provide bird feeders, bird seed and field guides to each of the 14 respite care rooms. Haralson has also donated bird feeders from the annual Wild Birds Unlimited Feeder Swap program to the homes of families under the home health care of Hospice.
Sally Cobb, a therapist at Hospice said, “Thanks to her generous support, Hospice of Greensboro has been able to furnish patients and their families with a constant connection to nature and a welcome distraction from the heaviness of end of life issues. This relationship has become especially meaningful since it has allowed people in our community to learn about ‘the nature connection’ that we here at Hospice believe is a valuable tool to help with end of life support.
During the presentation of the Friend to the Environment Award, Haralson also received recognition for her involvement in citizen science programs such as NC Candid Critters from NC State University and NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Project FeederWach from Cornell University, and NC Neighborhood Nestwatch from Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center.
Haralson recently completed a 200 hour program through the North Carolina Environmental Education Certification Program, which certifies that a participant has the knowledge and skills to be an environmental educator in North Carolina.
Haralson also partners with the environmentally focused Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch Library to provide bird feeders and bird seed, and has donated nature book club sets to the Greensboro Public Library. She is collaborating with the library, Piedmont Bird Club, and T. Gilbert Pearson Audubon Society to start a young birder’s club in September. To learn more about this program, contact Haralson at Wild Birds Unlimited, 336-282-4458 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Through educational events at Wild Bird Unlimited, Haralson and her staff have helped people learn about local recycling, birds of prey, wildlife rehabilitation, and the solar eclipse. In April, Wild Birds Unlimited gave a free reusable stainless steel straw to any person willing to sign a Last Straw Pledge to avoid single use plastics. More than 200 straws were given out.
Along with Get: Outdoors Paddlesports and Piedmont Land Conservancy, Wild Birds Unlimited hosted the inaugural Unplugged: Nature Talks with Local Folks at HQ event space downtown earlier this year. This event attracted 100 participants, who heard rapid fire presentations from nine local outdoor enthusiasts and nature experts. The co-hosts hope to make this a semi-annual event.
Lynne Dardanell of Piedmont Land Conservancy said “the Piedmont is lucky to have someone as inspirational and conscientious as Barbara Haralson, and the entire environmental community values what Barbara and Wild Birds Unlimited is bringing to our region.”
