2018-2019 Tanger Outlets Masterworks & POPS Series and Rice Toyota Chamber Series
(GREENSBORO, NC)—The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra (GSO) announces a magnificent 2018-2019 Tanger Outlets Masterworks Series, featuring Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson, regarded as some of the “busiest and most respected musicians in the world.” They will join forces with Music Director, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, in January, 2019 for a new co-commissioned double concerto by legendary jazz musician and composer, Chris Brubeck. This concert series will also feature Sitkovetsky playing Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Violins and cello in D minor, followed by Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite.

Anchoring the Tanger Outlets POPS Series this year are Broadway stars, Hugh Panaro, who just finished leading the Off-Broadway production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Barrow Street, and Scarlett Strallen, who is famous for her role as Mary Poppins in the West End. Recipient of the prestigious Edwin Forrest Award, Panaro is known for playing such roles as the Phantom in Broadway’s The Phantom of the Opera and Marius in the original national tour of Les Misérables. He has been described as “the leader of Broadway’s dwindling supply of great leading men,” as he demonstrates versatility and brings charm to his work. Two-time Olivier Award nominated actress, Scarlett Strallen, is best known for her musical theatre performances in Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in West End productions.
Other POPS Series performances include The Dukes of Dixieland, who are regarded as one of the finest New Orleans jazz groups in the world; the musical stylings of the Beach Boys, widely considered to be one of the greatest and most emblematic American bands of all time; and an exhilarating tribute to Paul McCartney with “Live & Let Die,” a celebration concert that will include a dynamic multimedia presentation of Sir Paul and the Fab Four.
The remainder of the Symphony’s 2018-2019 Masterworks season is equally captivating, presenting a two concerts in tribute to what would have been the 100th birthday of iconic American composer, Leonard Bernstein, including the West Side Story “Symphonic Dances,” Serenade for violin, and the Candide Overture. Other performances include: GSO’s principal violist, Scott Rawls, performing the Bartok Viola Concerto, plus Kodály and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3; cellist, Andres Diaz, playing Saint-Saens’ “The Swan,” from Carnival of the Animals, plus Bernstein’s “Three Meditations” from Mass, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 6 in D Major; and Lukas Geniusas playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, followed by Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
Finally, the GSO’s Rice Toyota Sitkovetsky and Friends Chamber Series continues to offer some of North Carolina’s finest chamber music, promising an extraordinary season featuring Masterworks guest artists, GSO musicians and Maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky in a more intimate setting. Repertoire includes Brahms’s “crown jewel” Piano Quintet in October, Mendelssohn’s “miraculous” Octet for Strings in January; Scott Rawls playing Loeffler and Beethoven in February; Kodaly and Dvorak in April; and Schubert’s famous Piano Trio in E-flat in May.
The 2018-2019 Season will be the final full season outside the Tanger Center for the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. Regarding their future performance venue, GSO’s President and CEO, Lisa Crawford, has stated that, “We are excited as we begin booking our artists for the opening of the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in 2020. Our current patrons will have the first chance to reserve their seats when we begin renewals in January 2019.”
