Greensboro’s ten best energy drinks
I lay claim to being YES’s in-house caffeine addict, and after guzzling gallons of energy cocktails, hometown brewed-and-born Source Burn comes out on top. I found it over a year ago at Cycles de Oro bike shop, and this 8.3 oz. bad boy has more caffeine than any other energy drink on the market (118 mg. per can) at its size, and an awesome mango-citrus flavor with very little aftertaste. It’s loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, and I never feel weird after drinking it. Check out its sister products Burn2 and Sugar Free Burn, and watch out for their top-secret product coming soon. After these fine folks gave the office some samples, it’s now the official energy drink of Yes! Weekly.
Produced by the Arizona Tea Company this one comes in a 16 oz. can, and while it has an odd ginger ale-type flavor (which they claim is ‘“citrus’”), it has serious tweak power. It contains all the normal energy drink ingredients ‘— guarana, caffeine, carnitine, and ginseng ‘— plus milk thistle. Definitely good for those days when coffee won’t cut it. But be warned, not for those confined to a cubicle. Available both regular and low-carb.
SOBE Adrenaline Rush
In my opinion, this is the tastiest one out there. Very similar to Burn with its mango-grapefruit tanginess, but a little bit sweeter on the finish. If you like Burn but only need 79 mg. of caffeine to wake up, take this route instead. Available in both regular and sugar-free, both equally tasty.
The original; the old standby. It assails your tastebuds with a tart, Nerds candy-like flavor and ‘“gives you wings’” with 80 mg of caffeine. Its primary source of energy is Taurine, which is little more than bull testosterone harvested from the nether regions of the aforementioned bovine source. Mmmmm’…tasty. Too naughty to be legal in France, this Austrian product scores major points with nightclubbers and barflies alike.
Mountain Dew Amp
Tastes pretty much like regular Dew, but with higher octane. They combine taurine, ginseng, caffiene and gaurana, throw it in a really cool can and charge double the price of a regular 20 oz Mountain Dew.
SOBE No Fear
Another 16 oz. biggun, this collaborative project between SOBE and No Fear has a tasty berry/passion fruit flavor and is strong enough to take your lunch money and laugh at you. Traditional energy ingredients combined with sports supplement creatine to provide the extreme sports set with an additional boost. Don’t be deceived by it’s pale pink color’—it will 360 kickflip it’s way into your adrenaline glands and slap the taste out your mouth.
Monster Energy Drinks
At 16 oz and packing a full-on wallop in four very different flavors. YES! Weekly Art Director Lauren Cartwright says of this one: ‘“I drank one four days ago, and I still don’t feel right.’” Considering all our adventures in the office, reader, take note of this statement. Available in the regular Nerds-esque original, sugar-free Monster, Monster Assualt which has a slight cola flavor, and Monster Khaos which has a very pleasant combination of orange, peach, pear, apple, pineapple and white grape juices with Monster’s energy blend.
Endorsed by dance music hottie DJ Rap (the chick from the Twix commercial) and Formula One racers, this one not only comes available in a 16 oz size but also in a ridiculous triple strength 24 ouncer. The regular and diet versions taste like gummy bears, and the cola version bears striking resemblance to Jolt cola. This one makes an excellent cocktail when combined with vodka or rum, and delivers on its promise to ‘“party like a rockstar.’”
XS Energy Drinks
Available in the broadest variety of flavors and all sugar free, XS tastes really good, but lacks the speedy power of its competitors. This one derives its energy blend primarily from B vitamins and botanicals and comes in cherry, lemon, citrus, green tea, cranberry- grape and tropical blast flavors. Good for beginners, but watch out, this product is sold by ‘“independent distributors’” in a marketing scheme so systematic it even gives Amway salesmen the heebie jeebies.
Found in gaming centers and LAN parties everywhere, this clear, Guarana-based beverage comes in regular and sugar free. John Reeves, at the Digital Lifestyle center in Greensboro says it ‘“tastes like Sprite with a twist of fruit flavor’” and kicks up his energy level, ‘“for about an hour.’” It comes in a blue bottle reminiscent of a studded condom and has an equally naughty name.
