Letters to the Editor for the Aug. 3 issue…
Chuck Mann speaks again
Good job on the Karl Rove editorial (July 20). I’ve always known that some politicians would lie, cheat, and steal to get elected, vote themselves pay raises, hire friends and ‘associates’ to high paying jobs, and put the needs of the rich over the needs of the average citizen. But, it seems like thing are getting worse. What really bothers me is that the people don’t seem to want to do anything about it. I’m tired of corrupt politicians telling us what we can or cannot do. Aren’t you?
Dear Jordan Green,
As an English instructor at UNCG, I have been asked what you mean by ‘“the Lynyrd Skynyrd clause’” in your article’s first paragraph (‘“Many sides of truth emerge in two days of hearings,’” July 20). I know some of their lyrics but have not been able to explain the phrase. Can you help?
Thanks for asking. It’s probably pushing it to take such literary license in a straight news story, but I couldn’t resist. My editor also didn’t understand it. ‘“The Lynyrd Skynyrd clause’” comes from their song ‘“Don’t Ask Me No Questions.’”
The song isn’t about anything as sinister as running around in robes and terrorizing black folks; it seems to be about coming home with newfound fame, and being tired of the home folks pestering them with questions about life on the road in a rock and roll band. Here’s the chorus: ‘“So, don’t ask me no questions/ And I won’t tell you no lies/ So, don’t ask about my business/ And I won’t tell you goodbye.’”
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I will be able to use your explanation in class. I do know the Skynyrd song; I just didn’t make the connection. I kept thinking of the Neil Young/Alabama fight. It’s a good fit, the reference, once the particular song is clear. Thanks again for the rapid response.’
Wichita loves the Boss
I think everyone from our generation sold Bruce short way short (‘“The humility of Bruce Springsteen,’”July 27). I rediscovered his music in ’97, shortly before his reunion with the E Street Band, and realized that they shed light on America and show what should truly be important to us as humans. Their music is about the working class, people with real problems, love, cars, and humanity!
After looking into it a little more, I found out what ‘“Born in the USA’” was actually all about. Reagan may have helped him sell records, but Bruce was actually outraged by Reagan’s misinterpretation of the song. Read the lyrics again sometime. As far as ‘crass commercialism’ goes ‘— Chevrolet approached him during that era to use ‘“Born to Run’” or ‘“Born in the USA’” for their commercials. Bruce said no, and that’s why they continue to use ‘“Like A Rock’” by Bob Seger. I look back on my days of thinking Bruce was as lame as Madonna and Michael Jackson and think how blind I must have been, and how they don’t even come close to the importance of Bruce Springsteen or the E Street Band.
I proudly call him the Boss nowadays, a nickname which came from his stage presence during his concerts. He’s legendary for pushing the band till sometimes 2 and 3 in the morning to play every song from their collection as it grew and grew. Now there’s a concert where we would have most definitely got our money’s worth!
Truth & Rec feedback
Thank you for the wonderfully written article on the first public hearings of the GTRC (‘“Many sides of truth emerge in two days of hearings,’” July 20). I was present as a volunteer for the first day but had to leave the next morning and missed the second day of hearing 1. I’ll be at the other hearings and, if I get the chance, I’ll extend my thanks and congratulations for such great journalism in person. You chose the best material to quote and the article flowed well from beginning to end.

A Florida pagan speaks out
Read the recent article, ‘“State Street mystic Tavane Taylor exposes the secret behind bat’s blood’” (July 27)
Bat’s Blood – isn’t supposed to be pine sap, it is supposed to be Holly sap and color from the berry. Holly is the bat’s wing. Blood used as a post-fix description is always a sap. Check your sources for such a product, Azure Green (common in most shops) may only be pine, but there are various Oriental importers that have the real McCoy.
Just as Dove’s Blood is made from Geranium (wild), and Dragon’s Blood is made from Calamus (an oriental plant that looks like it has dragon scales, Calamus Draco was renamed to Daemomorops Draco) a member of the palm family (N.O. Palmaceae, Dracaena draco.) Draconis Resina is somewhat rare and the resin is as red as blood and the plant actually looks like a real dragon ‘— the leaves are known as Dragon’s Tears. (This plant also has various properties ‘— one of its uses is to CURE syphillis)’… Dragon’s Blood is not water soluble, but needs alcohol’… good for permanent writings in a Book of Shadows.
‘Someone’ just chimed in from the peanut gallery to remind me that they use it to dye horns for imitation tortoise shell…
The Blessing of a Pagan Education… 😉
PS: The Komodo (Varanus komodensis) is a dragon… Never say ‘no such thing.’

European Views about The Karl Rove Affair:
You think that the Karl Rove Affair is a local thing? Well think again. Karl Rove has more than once aimed at leading politicians throughout Europe. We are following this with great interest.
From what we get here in Sweden Karl Rove bring together high-level representatives from various intelligence, law enforcement, and homeland security agencies for briefings. In his national and homeland security role as Deputy White House Chief of Staff, there are severe allegations that Rove has quite recently authorized the misuse of US intelligence, including potentially illegal phone and email wiretaps, to gather extremely sensitive information in order to smear his political opponents. Rove has access to ‘all source intelligence,’ Top Secret/Special Background Investigation (SBI) access to compartments and special access programs (SAPs), Special Intelligence (SI),VRK (Very Restricted Knowledge), Byeman, Talent Keyhole (TK), Gamma, COMINT, ECI, Endseal, H and Pearl. By this Rove can access reports on ‘black bag’ and other ‘sneak and peek’ operations, signals intelligence (SIGINT) information, including transcripts of domestic FBI wiretaps, human intelligence reports and internal CIA, NSA, DIA, FBI, and Homeland Security documents.
My question to you Americans is: Would you share your secrets and intelligence with Karl Rove?
[The] CIA will indeed have problems in the future to gather foreign intelligence that you need so badly for the homeland security. I would personally zip it until the guy is behind bars. What’s the point in saying something when it’s just used to smear domestic opponents. Just face it. He just backfired the intelligence in USA.

I’m becoming an honest-to-God fan of yours. I just e-mailed this and your great piece on Greensboro’s Communists to my journalist fiancé in Ipswich, Mass. Thanks for what you do.
