Longworth sees Da Vinci movie as divisive
After sitting atop the best-seller list for several years, Dan Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code, has finally come to the big screen, and with it,’ a rash of controversy.
‘ Many Catholics are boycotting the film because it purports the notion that Jesus had a child by Mary Magdalene.’ First of all, The Da Vinci Code is only a novel, but even if it were 100 percent accurate, why should anyone care if Jesus had sex with a woman?
‘ If you believe that Jesus is the son of God, then you already accept that he was human, and humans are known to have sex.
‘ Catholics who are upset by Ron Howard’s film should spend their energies protesting something that really matters, like the Pope’s stand against birth control which has contributed to the spread of hunger and AIDS in third world countries;’ or to the church’s refusal to elect a woman cardinal; or to coming up with a better system for preventing and dealing with child molestation by priests.
The Da Vinci Code is fiction.
These other problems are real.
Let us pray.
