One good hit deserves another: Mayweather vs.
This long, hot summer is drawing to a close, but things are heating up in the world of professional boxing.
Saturday, Sept. 13 will mark the long-awaited rematch between 11-time world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, to be held live at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
For area boxing fans, Fathom Events and Mayweather Promotions have teamed up (once again) to bring this hard-hitting grudge match to almost 600 screens nationwide, including some in the area. “Mayhem: Mayweather vs. Maidana” will be screened in Greensboro at Cinemark Brassfield Cinema 10 and Regal Greensboro Grande Stadium 16, and in Winston-Salem at Southern Theatres The Grand 18 Winston-Salem IMAX.
Less than six months ago, on May 3, Mayweather and Maidana first clashed at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in a welterweight championship bout billed as “The Moment.” Mayweather maintained his undefeated record by besting Maidana in a majority decision, but it was clear to all who watched the match (which was also broadcast to cinema screens by Fathom Events) that this was only the beginning. The stage was set for a rematch.
“I love that fans can go to the movie theaters to watch my fights,” said Mayweather in an official statement. “Our relationship with Fathom has been a good one thus far and it’s only getting stronger. This is my first rematch in over a decade and I’m happy that we’re going to give fans the opportunity to see it live on the big screen.”
Said Maidana: “I am so happy that this rematch is being shown on movie screens because when I hand Floyd his first loss, it should be larger than life. Our first fight was exciting, but this one is going to be even better and I hope fans are ready.”
“The May match-up between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana had all of us on the edge of our cinema seats as it was an ‘anything can happen,’ thrilling fight,” added Dan Diamond, senior vice-president of Fathom Events. “Fathom is thrilled to bring this winner-take-all rematch to cinemas across the nation asboxing fans are sure to witness an epic battle they won’t soon forget.”
An 11-time world champion in five weight divisions, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is unquestionably one of the greatest – and most popular – professional boxers in the world today. He holds a record of 46-0 (with 26 knockouts) and has defeated all comers throughout his career, including Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Canelo Alvarez and, of course, Marcos Maidana.
With a record of 35-4 (with 31 knockouts), the Argentinian-born Maidana is the former WBA welterweight champion, having secured the title after defeating Adrien Broner in December 2013. Although he lost the first match against Mayweather, he threw more punches at Mayweather than any of his previous opponents – including 100 punches in the opening round alone (!).
Said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions: “We are pleased to continue to work with Fathom and provide the fans with this unbelievable viewing experience. If the first fight was any indication of what is to come between Floyd and Marcos, September 13 will be a fight night to remember, and I can’t think of a better way in which to see it happen live.”
“Saturday night’s all right for fighting,” Elton John sang, and if the previous Mayweather/Maidana bout was any indication, their Sept. 13 th rematch will be even bigger and bolder than the first. !
