“A Christmas Carol: The Musical” returns to High Point this Holiday Season
A beloved holiday classic is returning to the High Point Theatre stage December 15-18 with High Point Community Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol: The Musical. In this reimagined version of Charles Dickens’ classic, this production combines the nostalgia of the holidays with the splendor of a Broadway-style musical.
A Christmas Carol: The Musical originally opened in 1994 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It is filled with beautiful melodies by Alan Menken and memorable lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (creators of Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid). HPCT’s production has a cast of 60+ local actors ages 6 to adult.
Director Michele Martino says that she immediately fell in love with this version of the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his journey from miserly to merry. “With a touching score, and a tight-running, tongue-in-cheek script, this musical version is sure to bring Christmas cheer to audiences of all ages. And this year we’ve added some exciting new enhancements and ‘magical’ surprises!”
When High Point Community Theatre premiered this production last year, they were hopeful that it would be successful enough to warrant making it an annual event. “Our 2015 production was very well received by the community,” said High Point Community Theatre President Allison Seals. “And do to its overwhelming success, we are pleased to announce that we now plan to keep A Christmas Carol: Musical in our December production slot indefinitely”.
HPCT has made some pretty big investments in the production over the last year, both monetarily and in manpower. Last year HPCT rented most of the set pieces and many of the props and costume pieces from a theatre in Indiana. This year, everything was produced here in High Point… most of it by volunteers. “Dozens of volunteers put in hundreds of hours into making this holiday classic come to life this December, “said Seals. “It’s truly inspiring to see how this show has become a beloved holiday tradition for so many, both on and off the stage.”
All performances will be at High Point Theatre (220 E. Commerce Ave., High Point) December 15, 16 & 17 at 7:30 PM and December 17 & 18 at 2:00 PM. Tickets are on sale at www.highpointtheatre.com and www.hpct.net. You also can call the High Point Theatre Box office M-F (9am-5pm) at 336-887-3001. Ticket prices range from $18 to $22. HPCT is once again collecting canned food for Open Door Ministries. Bring non-perishable food items and drop them in the collection box in the lobby of the theatre at any performance.
High Point Community Theatre is 501c3 non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. This is HPCT’s 41st year of bringing quality live theatre to High Point and the surrounding areas. In addition to A Christmas Carol: The Musical, HPCT will present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast during its 2016/17 season.
