Ben & Jerry’s Hires High Point University Intern, Alexa Maldonado
HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 12, 2019 – High Point University rising junior Alexa Maldonado has turned her summer internship into a part-time position as a marketing coordinator for Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.
Maldonado is completing a summer internship as the marketing and sales coordinator for Ben & Jerry’s in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, this summer. Her responsibilities include managing new and existing catering partnerships, as well as creating a database for potential partnerships in the future. She also organizes “Snack & Share meetings” for the famous ice cream chain to introduce new flavors, and she creates marketing initiatives for other marks across the Southeast, including Atlanta.
Ben & Jerry’s was impressed with her work and offered Maldonado a remote, part-time position when she returns to HPU for the academic year. She recognizes that HPU provided her with experiences that prepared her for this internship.
“HPU has provided me with the connections and resources needed to best present myself in a professional setting,” says Maldonado, an event management major. “The small class sizes, personal relationships with my professors and various practice interviews provided by HPU were what helped me make the transition into a professional setting.”
Maldonado, a Brooklyn, New York native, says that HPU’s Office of Career and Professional Development guided her in changing her major during her sophomore year.
“Switching to a major in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication was a necessary decision for me to make in order to utilize my personal strengths to the best of my ability,” says Maldonado. “I would have never been able to find the career path best suited for me without the help of everyone in the career office.”
Dr. Brianna Clark, assistant professor of event management, also mentored Maldonado and helped select the courses she should take to be prepared for her future career.
The experience provided Maldonado with the chance to put the skills she gained at HPU into practice. She says she is grateful for the opportunity to work in the field and in a team setting, along with learning how to manage multiple projects at once.
“My internship experience has been so beneficial and enriching,” says Maldonado. “I’m excited to continue learning more about the world of marketing as I carry on my work with Ben & Jerry’s as a marketing coordinator starting in August.”
