BOOKMARKS TO HOST SCHOLASTIC SUMMER READING ROAD TRIP AUTHOR AND CHARACTER EVENT
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 5, 2018) – Bookmarks will present a Scholastic Summer Reading Road Trip event with Scholastic authors on Tuesday, July 17 from 5–7 p.m. Young readers will be able to meet authors and characters, play games, make crafts, and enter giveaways at this free event, to be held in and around Bookmarks at 634 W. Fourth St. in downtown Winston-Salem. This event is for children from 0–12 and is a unique, hands-on event perfect for families.
Featured authors will be Derrick Barnes, Jonathan Fenske, and Allan Woodrow, author of The Pet War, Unschooled, and Class Dismissed. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to meet a few of their favorite Scholastic characters: Clifford the Big Red Dog, Geronimo Stilton, and Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man. The characters and handlers will roam around the event, interacting with kids and families in attendance and posing for photos.
Derrick Barnes is the Newbery-honor author of Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut, as well as several other acclaimed books, including the Ruby and the Booker Boys series: Brand New School, Brave New Ruby; Trivia Queen, Third Grade Supreme; The Slumber Party Payback; and Ruby Flips for Attention.
Jonathan Fenske is the author/illustrator of the leveled readers Woodward and McTwee, Love Is in the Air, Guppy Up!, and A Pig, a Fox, and a Box. Barnacle Is Bored is his first picture book.
Allan Woodrow is the author of more than 30 books for children, including Unschooled, Class Dismissed, The Pet War, and The Rotten Adventures of Zachary Ruthless. His next book, Field Tripped, will be out in September and is a companion book to Unschooled and Class Dismissed.
An effort to combat the “summer slide” during which elementary and middle school aged students experience learning loss during summer break, the Scholastic Summer Reading Road Trip is a series of pop-up reading festivals designed to inspire a love of reading in the community. Bookmarks is excited to serve as a host site for this tour and encourages students in our area to participate in summer reading. Specific summer reading programs sponsored by the Forsyth County Public Library and Bookmarks help to further increase interest in reading.
Bookmarks is a literary arts nonprofit organization that fosters a love of reading and writing in the community. Bookmarks programming connects readers with authors and books and is achieved through the largest annual book festival in the Carolinas, a School Initiative that reaches 9,000 students annually, and year-round events in the gathering space and nonprofit independent bookstore that opened in July 2017.
