Chamber Music Every Monday and Tuesday at Eastern Music Festival
If it’s Monday and Tuesday during Eastern Music Festival’s five-week season, then it must be time for chamber music.
The 57-year-old classical music festival designates the first two evenings of each week for chamber music.
“Chamber music is like no other music because of the intimacy between the artists. Many of our chamber musicians have been playing together for years and their deep knowledge and love of the music shows,” says EMF Executive Director Chris Williams. “Chamber music is also a favorite of audiences because of its purity and the fact that patrons can hear each instrument so clearly. It’s something you have to experience.”
Chamber music once referred to secular music that was performed in private households or chambers; hence the term “chamber music.” The term encompassed vocal, instrumental, solo, ensemble and even orchestral music when orchestras were rather small. As orchestras grew significantly in size starting in the later 1700s, the term “chamber music” took on its present definition as music written for and performed by small instrumental ensembles.
Today chamber ensembles generally range from two to six artists, with the most common being trios and quartets, and with the most popular being string quartets.
EMF hosts Chamber Music at 8 p.m. Mondays (beginning tonight) at Guilford College’s Dana Auditorium and at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays through July 24 at UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Recital Hall.
