Dudley students working with participatory budgeting initiative
Community organizers behind the recently approved Participatory Budgeting process in Greensboro are working with local high school students to increase awareness of the program.
Members of Participatory Budgeting Greensboro and UNCG’s Communication Studies Department recently lead a workshop with honor students at Dudley High School. After going through an orientation process, students worked to develop their own mock proposals and promoted them via one-minute speeches. The students will have an information table at Dudley’s last regular season football game on Nov. 7.
Greensboro’s city council recently approved a funding proposal of $100,000 to help implement participatory budgeting in the city’s five council districts. After initial implementation, community members will work to prioritize microprojects in each district. The proposal calls for the city to allot $500,000 annual for the community projects, with $100,000 going to each council district. Staff is set to give a program update at the council meeting on Monday.
